JayRewind: RW!NDWRLD-Q&A
JayRewind is a producer from Milton, MA. Versatility is one word that describes JayRewind’s talent best. His ability to create beats along the likes of a Kaytranada track then shift gears and make a Frank Ocean type beat is very impressive. Jay’s skillset has provided him opportunities to produce tracks that have received over tens of thousands streams for artists such as PIMPYZ, bandsxx, and Surf.
Johnny Dube: What was your childhood like in Milton?
Geez… my childhood was fairly good for the most part. My mom pretty much raised us by herself. There's some much unspoken things that happened to me as a child, I just choose to keep it closed off. I always was the class clown in school, I was very outspoken, open to meet new people, etc. but overall nothing crazy was going on during my childhood. I was just bouncing from suburb to suburb literally just living my years lmao.
JD: How did you get introduced to the music making process and who are some of your inspirations?
So my Dad made music for as long as I can remember, but I was not interested in it. I was too young to understand. But I remember one day listening to Kanye West’s Graduation album on my ipod shuffle and I was like what the fuckkk! This is crazy! I was like “How do I make what I'm hearing right!!?? Bro, during this time Drake was all I would listen to. Him and Wayne. But after that Graduation Album, I started listening to music in a different way. I started to hear the backend tracks of the music, which would be the beats, and I studied the “beat” aspect of music. There's a huge grey area from when this took place to when I actually got a computer and started. I'm pretty sure me and my siblings got a laptop one christmas and I just happened to have a laptop lol. So I would go on and search “ free beat making websites” and I would use all of them. I grasp whatever I could to make beats. I used this website called Audiotool. It's basically like soundcloud but comes with a beat making DAW for free. If you search up “wZG5FA” on there you can find ALL of my beginner beats. While using Audiotool to make beats, I would search for tutorials on YouTube to learn more about beats. Then I found FL Studio. Long story short, my dad ended up buying me FL and that's when things started to get serious. I worked with artists, other producers, made a YouTube channel and started to get paid! I started looking at the business and money side of music. I just educated myself because I knew no one would and it became my passion. Life is crazy, I think about this all the time like I'm very blessed to have this passion pay off literally lol. Some of my inspirations definitely have to be Travis Scott, Wondagurl, Kanye West, Pierre Bourne, & Tame Impala.
JD: How would you describe your music style?
I can't really put a certain style on my music. I dabble in all types of styles but I would say my music is very bouncy and dark. I mean, like I always have trouble discussing this about myself. Like I really don’t know lmao. Other people do a better job explaining how my music is and what style it is. Personally I can't really say. However, like I said my music is melodic and it's just vibey. Just listen to my music lmaoo!
JD: What is your favorite platform to upload your beats to? Why?
Probably Soundcloud lol. Classic. It's just super easy, I can post whenever I want. No delay, no waiting, just post it. I would like to upload on more streaming services. I just don't want there to be mid content on there. I have a problem of being unsure of my work but I'm getting reassurance from many things like other producers and artists so I am confident about what's next because what I do now will shape me musically later.
JD: Have you done any collaborations with artists that were significant to your growth?
I think the one artist to really push me into a new realm of music is Surf. Definitely more people noticed my name when he started using my beats. I feel like being true to myself gave me an opportunity to continue to grow significantly too. Working on my youtube channel and pushing it to more people, getting my name out there. I feel like that helped me the most. I curated my own sound and again just being myself I think helps me continue to grow. Producers like Anthony Dluxe & Dude Clayy, I would say gave me more of an audience, more people looking in my direction.
JD: Do you have any upcoming projects that we should be aware of ?
Bro….. I got so much shit on the way and BIG BIG stuff happening, I'm just playing the waiting game. Recently I've been sending stuff to some big artists and upcoming artists. I'm just waiting lol. Also I want to put out my own solo project but i'm conflicted because I wanna grow a bigger fan base so when I drop, they go crazy! Also, this solo project has been in the works for a year now. I'm constantly switching the vibes of songs and beats so basically I just scrap ideas and start new. I don't know what direction i'm going for but definitely will come out sooner than you think.
